On Observing the Robins
winter robins, south ’til spring
first one, then two, then three
singing, chirping, noisy high up in the tree
white bellies, red chests
a cloak of gray on top
now three, then two, then one, now none
winter’s tree bare except for
orange tinted morning sun
and oak’s brown leaves
Happy New Year! Today’s post is part of the 2012 Challenge, A River of Stones, in which participants are asked to:
. . . notice something properly every day and write it down.
As Sherlock Homes would tell Dr. Watson, you see but you do not observe (from A Scandal in Bohemia). My goal is to increase my observation of the small things in life.
Surprisingly, I was able to step out on the deck and take pictures of the robins. They were way high in the tree, but with minimal cropping you can see all three, including the white belly.

What a lovely post to start a New Year. Thanks for giving me the link.
You’re welcome – I always like it when a fellow blogger also posts something ordinary and makes it special too.
I’ve spent some time catching up tonight/this morning (it is officially after midnight) and I wanted you to know that I look forward to following along with you this year. As with my sewing, I need to break inertia and just start putting words to paper… to flow with it. You never get good if you don’t try, and you never get done if you don’t start. Thanks! ~ Lynda
PS: I have everybody on digest mode for their blog posts. Posts come in on Mondays. It’s hard to wait sometimes (like tonight for instance) but it helps me to manage my time a bit better and I get my work done! ;)
Oh dear, this should have been posted on the above post about you purpose… But it gives me the opportunity to tell you that I love your robin photograph, and your poetry. ~ L
Thank you sweetie. I love your comments no matter what spot they’re in.
Lynda – thanks for catching up. I look forward to following along with you also. I’m not sure which I found funnier – the reaction you get to the chores or your fashion outfit that you wear to the yard LOL.
I put everyone on digest mode also and didn’t like it. I now have some on digest mode and some on daily which seems to help. Most everyone who leaves regular comments here is on daily mode.
You did a nice job with that. I read it a few times to try and get the full picture there.
Thanks Derek. It was quite different than the style I usually write in, so hopefully it wasn’t too obscure.
Nice work, Nancy. Great photo, they make the perfect ornaments for the bare tree.
They ARE the perfect ornament – great description.
love the poem…images floated before my mind’s eye…as i read the words…
serene…humbling…foretelling of a year of peace…and joy… :)
Awww. . . thanks.
Wow- quite a well dressed crowd there.
Yes they were! I was surprised to see how bright their undersides were; apparently robins don’t go to winter plumage like that hawk that was in our yard.
Beautiful picture.
Thank you! I was so surprised I was able to click them before they flew away.
